Deputy AG Rosenstein calls for law to require encryption backdoors (The Register)
Deputy US Attorney General Rod Rosenstein expressed a desire for legislators to insist technology companies and software developers decrypt private conversations that may be relevant in criminal investigations. If these companies do not comply, Rosenstein said they would be “strong-armed” in doing so. Referencing the struggle between Apple and the FBI in the San Bernardino shooting incident in 2016, Rosenstein said he believes this approach is necessary to stop criminals from ducking law enforcement, and when met with resistance from tech companies, these investigations become time-consuming, uncertain, and expensive to carry out.
