Innocence Project helps man gain freedom after he spent 21 years in prison for a murder he did not commit (The Modesto Bee)
After spending 21 years in prison for a crime he says he didn’t commit, and someone else claiming responsibility, Mexico native Domingo Bustos Anaya took a plea deal that would let him return home. On Monday, Anya pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter, The Modesto Bee reported. Sentenced and convicted of murder in 1996, Anya spent the next 21 years making attempts to get the court to reconsider his case. Attorneys at the Northern California Innocence Project agreed to review his case and found the court system failed him from the very beginning. The plea deal with prosecutors was the only guarantee Anya wouldn’t spend the remainder of his days in prison.
